Panasonic KX-TGA400b Button problems

The keypads in these phones have a 100% failure rate.
Average life of the original is just 6-18 months!

Why?
It's very simple...
The button contacts are way too small!

Circuit board
contact size

6-7mm
Conductive
keypad button

just 4mm

Original keypad contact size vs keypad size KX-TGA400b

If the original buttons were just 0.5mm smaller it would not work at all!  touching only the center half of the switch. That means the original button uses only 1/4 of a millimeter of it's total 4mm diameter!

Improved Keypad Comparison Vs Panasonic Keypad

Our button contacts touch over 20 TIMES more surface area of the switch!

Membrane keypads such as the Perma-Pad™ and Pad-Mate™ do not significantly increase contact size.
Membrane keypads still reply on the known defective OEM keypad with small contacts.
The small contacts push down on the highly flexible membrane only in a small area.
We used membrane keypads only until our real improved rubber keypad was available.
At the time, there was no other choice.
It's certainly cheaper and if it was really better, we'd still be using a membrane!

The numbers 1-0, #, * use the circular contacts. The other buttons all use the rectangle contacts.

The GRAY circles represent the original conductive contact. These work fine for the rectangle areas, however with the circular buttons they contact the center just fine, but the outside area is barely touched. A little dirt or goo will start to effect the button very quickly.

The GREEN area shows our new contact pad.

You are not alone!
Basically every single KX-TGA200b and KX-TGA400b phone is having (or will soon have) one or both of the two major problems. A quick internet search will provide you with dozens of message forums where people are complaining about the defects in this phone design.

Bad keypad

  1. Oil leaks from the keypad every time you use it, clogging up the contacts inside.

  2. The circuit board is designed for 6mm diameter contacts but the keypads have 4mm diameter contacts. That is 33% too small... A HUGE mistake!  Even a tiny amount of oil or grime causes complete button failure.

Choppy Transmit
Won't Register, Disconnects, Loose connection to base etc..

  1. The call sounds fine to you but your caller gets static or can't understand you.

  2. This intermittent problem will only get worse and the only way you will know is IF you are told by the other party.

  3. Caused by high frequency signals bouncing back on itself creating an echo effect that disrupts the phones ability to transmit a clean digital signal.

  4. Strangely enough, this occurs more often in the newer designed phones that have fewer years of use (even new) making it a defect, not a failure from use or age.

We install an additional new part in every phone
that eliminates 95% of the causes for this problem!

We have repaired plenty of phones previously fixed by other companies and the factory.
We have not seen any evidence that any other company has the experience or has
taken the time to discover a real lasting solution for this problem.

We recently repaired a 6 month old Panasonic factory refurbished phone. The keypad was working... only IF you hit the keys very hard!
